Jul 23, 2009 - You get a lot of respect for doing this down the gym. I would go lower than this though

Jul 19, 2009 - When you go to the top, don't straight your legs. This is very bad for you knees (patella). Just bend them at the top a little.

Jul 7, 2009 - Pretty good, but I would go down a little bit further at least till you are parellel to the ground.

May 7, 2009 - When people say you should be able to bench press your body weight, they mean to set that as a goal, not that it's your capability... a "test" for fitness IS the ability to bench press your own weight. Leg presses however are completely different.. I can leg press about 4 times my bodyweight.. (720lbs max on an angled leg press machine) but when it comes to squats, I only do about 185lbs free weight, and 225lbs on a smith machine. Start light on the bench, get your form right.

Sep 8, 2008 - Your own bodyweight would probably be close to your one-rep maximum (don't do your one-rep maximum) if you were fit but new to lifting. GuitaristJesse is right, there's no easy answer. Just take light weights, do ten reps, add ten pounds (or whatever increment) and continue. People in gyms are used to seeing people do this, so you won't look weird or anything.

Jul 6, 2008 - dont bench press your body weight if you have just started weights. you will hurt yourself. start off really light and add more weight.
